Rezulin was developed by Parke Davis, a division of Warner Lambert, to help facilitate insulin absorption for patients with Type If Diabetes. In the beginning, it was marketed both as a monotherapy drug and to be used. in conjunction with other prescription medications. Warner Lambert hailed Rezulin to be the cure for non-ins-ulin dependent diabetes, and the company heavily praised the drug to the financial markets as its latest "blockbuster" drug. The drug was submitted to the FDA on June 31, 1996, and was slated for fast track approval. On January 30, 1997, the FDA approved Rezulin for non-insulin dependent diabetes patients. As early as February 1997, the FDA admonished Warner-Lambert for its marketing strategy stating that the ads were misleading and false.
By the end of 1997, even with news of adverse events creeping into the media, Rezulin sales totaled $420 million. During the drug's three-year stay on the market, the labeling had 4 separate changes, the last of which was in June of 1999. On March 18, 1999, the Los Angeles Times reported 55 deaths prior to the July 1998 labeling change and 57 deaths after July 1998. In March 21, 2000, Rezulin was voluntarily removed from the U.S. market but only after two million prescriptions and $1.8 billion in sales.
